Saturday!

Good morning blog readers! I hope your weekend is off to a great start! Sienna is being a bit of a diva this morning… very particular about what she wants! Its driving me crazy! Needless to say I made a quick breakfast of toast and yogurt (I’m going to try and not eat dairy for a while- I have to finish this tub of plain yogurt first though!). Today we will probably just be hanging around the house… I hope to get a workout in and go grocery shopping (which of course I love to do!). I’m going to look around for some vegan products since I am trying to reduce the amount of animal products I eat (dairy being the main one I am trying to avoid). I plan of taking some pictures of what we buy!

I used multi grain bread and topped it with almond butter and homemade raspberry-mango jam.

And plain low fat yogurt w/ flax and defrosted frozen blueberries.

I’m having issues with the pictures… I will try and get them posted if/when I fix the problem!

  1. what substitutes do you use when you avoid dairy products?

  2. Can’t wait to see what you buy at the store!! If you can find the WholeSoy brand of soy-yogurt, I highly recommend that in place of dairy yogurt; oh and of COURSE stock up on some more almond-milk and hempmilk!! and Earth Balance buttery spread/vegan margarine!! :0)

Brit- I already don’t really drink cows milk. I prefer almond milk and hemp milk. I’m going to get some soy yogurt which I have had before and liked. I’m going to look into the soy cheese’s as well. It isn’t too hard to avoid the main dairy sources like cheese, milk and yogurt its the added dairy in already made things that can be hard to avoid!

VeggieGirl- thank you for the suggestions! We already use Earth Balance instead of butter and I love it!

  4. Props to you for not eating dairy for awhile…I want to do that for like a month and see if I notice any changes in my body! I Just LOVE cheese! And…I feel like it would be hard when eating out. Let me know how it goes for you…perhaps you will inspire me to try :) I already gave up milk!

  5. I am finishing up at the University of Calgary, so I live near Foothills! It would make me SO happy if we had a Whole Foods here, I love the place. You would love Trader Joe’s too…it’s like a Whole Foods but less expensive. It’s amazing how fast you can spend $200 bucks at planet organic haha. Do you ever go to the Barracks Farmers Market? Also, have you been able to find Fage here?

  6. Although, seeing as your getting off dairy for a while you probably won’t be searching:-p

Jenna- I’m going to try going dairy free but I don’t think I can do it for too long! I really like cheese too! We will see how it goes… I’m just going to reduce my intake for now!

    - Can’t even tell you how badly I want to go to W.F’s and T.J’s… I don’t even think anywhere in Canada has them? I have never been to the Barracks Farmers Market- I have wanted to though… is it good? Planet is awesome- I wish it was a bit bigger though! And no… I have never been able to find fage- I’d love to try it though! I really do love plain yogurt but I’m going to see how the soy yogurt fairs. Is school what brought you to Calgary? Where are you originally from?

  8. The only Whole Foods I’ve found in Canada is in Vancouver, and it is pretty new. They don’t have a Trader Joe’s…but I would relocate to wherever one opened! haha. You should definitely check out the Barracks Farmers Market, it is indoors (obviously, given this crazy cold) but I really recommend going in the summer, it makes for a fun day and you can get lunch out of all the samples they give away. The have a great wine store near by too.

I find Planet pretty small too, and there isn’t a huge variety of organic markets in Calgary…I know there is a tiny one in Kensington, but haven’t checked it out. (I’m mostly a Safeway/Co-Op girl cause it is a little more affordable on my budget)

I am not a huge meat eater either (though I do like my Alberta Beef every once in a while) but if you ever are thinking of a place to try I hear The Coup on 17th Ave. is a really good vegetarian/vegan restaurant. I’ve been wanting to check it out for the longest time.

School (and my boyfriend) is what brought me up to Canada. Let me tell you, I never thought I’d be up here haha! I originally grew up in the Marshall Islands (small islands in the Pacific). I have also lived in Hawaii and California, just before I moved up here. The cold is definitely a different experience for me, but I like Calgary besides that.

Sorry for the massive post, but what a small world! :-p
Love the Blog and Sienna is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yea, one more thing. I just tried these organic maple flakes from IGA. The only ingredient is pure organic maple syrup and they are incredible. I think the brand is called Equinox. They would go great in your oatmeal (or on ice-cream like I had tonight!!) You should keep your eye out for them

  9. I’ve been to the Coup quite a few times, and I really enjoy it (last time I went for lunch I had a smoked tofu sandwich and it was incredible). In my opinion, it’s the best vegetarian restaurant in Calgary, and it is definatley worth trying! I’ve been to the Barracks, and enjoyed it quite a bit (you can definately get some produce that you don’t see in other grocery stores), but it takes a lot of time, so make sure you’re not in a rush if you go! Community Natural Foods (downtown) has a good bulk selection, and I found it to be cheaper than Planet Organic for the things I buy.

Good job with the blog so far!

Noodle- I didn’t know they had a WF’s in Vancouver! Well I will just have to go sometime. The farmer’s market sounds great… I will definably have to check it out.. I go to the outdoor ones during summer (usually the northland and bears paw ones). And Coup sounds great! I want to go right now! Calgary is so big its hard to know where to go.

Wow you have lived in some pretty great places! And all of them have beautiful weather! I’m sure Calgary was a bit of a shock… I really like it here- I just wish it was a bit warmer (although this this winter has been pretty nice). I’m so excited your from Calgary- it is such a small world. I will definably look for the maple flakes- those sounds awesome.

What are you taking at U of C?

Kim- Another Calgarian? How great! Thanks for the comment- I will defiantly have to check out Coup and Barracks!
